Kai Schumann, born in Dresden in 1976, is a German-Syrian actor who is known for his impressive performances on the theater stage and in film and television productions. After training at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin – together with Lars Eidinger, Nina Hoss, Fritzi Haberlandt, Devid Striesow and Mark Waschke – he began his career on stage.

Engagements have taken him to the Landestheater Tübingen, Staatstheater Stuttgart and Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, among others, where he has worked with renowned directors such as Robert Wilson, Jürgen Gosch, Volker Lösch, Karin Henkel, Stephan Kimmig and René Pollesch. Most recently, he impressed in 2024 at the Neumarkt Theater Zurich in a production by Kevin Rittberger.

Schumann made his film debut in 1999 in Rosa von Praunheim’s The Einstein of Sex. On television, he is best known for his roles as Dr. Mehdi Kaan in Doctor’s Diary (2008), Dr. Johannes Reichau in Tatort Leipzig (2009-2013) and Inspector Nikolas Heldt in the ZDF series Heldt (2013-2021). Other TV projects include Klimawechsel (2011, directed by Doris Dörrie), Der Minister (2012), Die Löwin (2012), Amokspiel (2018), Sarah Korn (2019), Kroyman (2019) and Tonis Welt (2020).

His most recent projects include appearances in Marie fängt Feuer (2024), 2 Frauen für alle Felle (2024), SOKO Leipzig (2024), Die Heiland (2023), Mandat für Mai (2023) and Mord mit Aussicht (2023). He last impressed in the cinema in 2022 in Rosa von Praunheim’s Rex Gildo – The Last Dance.
