Niklas Wetzel was born in Burgstädt and grew up in Niederfrohna. Niklas studied acting at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich until 2019. During his studies, he appeared in „Wartesaal“ based on the novel „Exil“ by Lion Feuchtwanger (director: Stefan Pucher) at the Münchner Kammerspiele and in Peter Verhelst’s „Die Bakchen – lasst uns tanzen“ directed by Wim Vandekeybus at the Residenztheater in Munich.

Niklas’s first permanent engagement took him to the Deutsches Theater Berlin from 2019 to 2023. His roles there included 2019 in „Zu der Zeit der Königinmutter“ by Fiston Mwanza Mujila (director: Charlotte Sprenger), 2020 in „jedermann (stirbt)“ by Ferdinand Schmalz (director: Data Tavadze) and 2021 in „Der Idiot“ after Fyodor Dostoyevsky, directed by Sebastian Hartmann. He has also appeared in productions by Andreas Kriegenburg, Jorinde Dröse, Robert Lehniger and Bastian Kraft. Niklas Wetzel has been a member of the Schauspiel Leipzig ensemble since November 2023.

He has been nominated for Actor of the Year several times. 

Niklas Wetzel has also appeared in various cinema and television productions, such as ALASKA (winner of the Max Ophüls Prize) DER VERMESSENE MENSCH, EIN PLATZ AN DER SONNE and SOKO LEIPZIG.
